Tuning In to Local Labor Markets: Findings From the Sectoral Employment Impact Study

| CNN.com recently published an opinion piece authored by P/PV's Senior Vice President for Program Effectiveness, Sheila Maguire, in which she argues that focusing on whether job training works distracts from identifying approaches that can make a real difference in the lives of low-income individuals. She highlighted recent findings from P/PV's random assignment study as evidence of one approach that works. She also spoke about the findings of the study on WNYC's Brian Lehrer radio show. |

Launched in 1996, this initiative closely studied the impact of local city-to-suburb commuting strategies.
Career Advancement Academies
This project will evaluate the efforts of community colleges across three regions of California to provide bridges to college and high-wage careers for under-prepared young adults.
Casey Workforce Convening Project
P/PV has been charged by the Annie E. Casey Foundation to research what workforce strategies are the most effective for the formerly incarcerated and to host a meeting discussing these findings.
Chicago Workforce Project
The Chicago Workforce Project aims to increase workforce development organizations' capacity to use data as a tool for performance improvement.
College and Career Connections Fund
Acting as the project's intermediary organization, P/PV is working closely with community-based organizations in Riverside and San Bernardino counties in California to help disconnected, low-income youth reconnect with employment and postsecondary educational options.
Corporate Employment Retention Initiative (CERI)
CERI focused on identifying promising strategies of companies that invest in the retention and advancement of entry-level employees.
Employment Networks Project
An exploratory study of programs that help low-income people build informal employment networks.
Fathers at Work
A three-year, national initiative aimed at increasing employment, earnings and family attachment among young, low-income, noncustodial fathers.
First Place for Youth Evaluation
P/PV is conducting a formative evaluation of the First Place for Youth (FPFY) My First Place program. FPFY is a Bay Area–based nonprofit founded to promote the long-term mental, physical and economic health of youth ages 16 to 24 who are aging out of the foster care system.
Gulf Coast Alternative Staffing Initiative
This project aims to help Gulf Coast organizations develop Alternative Staffing Organizations that will connect low-income, displaced and disadvantaged Gulf Coast residents with employment.
Job Opportunity Investment Network
A funding collaborative of several major foundations and city and state agencies aimed at addressing the workforce needs of Philadelphia's disadvantaged workers and employers.
New York City Benchmarking Project
The New York City Benchmarking Project engages workforce development organizations in activities to strengthen their capacity for using data as a tool for performance improvement.
New York City Sectors Initiative (a project of the Workforce Innovation Fund)

Philadelphia Workforce Development Corporation Training and Technical Assistance
This initiative is designed to improve the effectiveness of Philadelphia's EARN (Employment, Advancement and Retention Network) Centers as they help local public assistance recipients find and retain employment.
