Corporate Employment Retention Initiative (CERI)
All too often, conventional corporate wisdom says that low-wage employees are not loyal—for an extra twenty cents an hour, they might jump ship, taking valuable training with them. Companies can be tempted to treat these employees as dispensable.
Fortunately, many companies have turned this conventional wisdom around, discovering the value of investing in training and retention of low-wage workers. P/PVs Corporate Employment Retention Initiative (CERI) works with companies who focus on the retention and advancement of entry-level employees. Funded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, CERI explores the practices of selected employers to learn about their approaches to hiring, training and advancing lower-wage workers. Companies weve studied include First Tennessee Bankcorp, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Marriott International, Phillips Restaurants and Ryla Teleservices.
So far, weve found that, even in the present uncertain economy, the companies in our study have prospered and grown. P/PV is writing a series of articles and reports on our CERI findings. These reports will aid other employers and organizations interested in improving the retention and advancement of entry-level workers.

Here to Stay: Tips and Tools to Hire, Retain and Advance Hourly-Wage Workers
by Carol Clymer and Laura Wyckoff
May 2007,
95 pages
Much has been written about retaining high performers and upper management. But where can businesses go for advice about keeping their lesser-skilled, hourly-wage workers? P/PV has addressed the gap with this new guide. Based on the practices of businesses that value their workers, Here to Stay offers a series of cost-effective actions, including hiring the right people, welcoming them, retaining them and developing their talents for the company's benefit.
Here to Stay is ideal for:
- Owners of small and medium-size businesses
- Human resources staff
- Managers or shift foremen
- Workforce development organizations
Workforce organizations can use the guide to understand business practices that keep lower-income workers on the job; to generate ideas to help employer partners who are experiencing high turnover; to provide content for newsletters, presentations or workshops for the business community; and as a resource—and a thank-you—to businesses that hire their job seekers.
